How to Toughen up a 2000 Dodge 5.9L Diesel NV4500 Transmission

We would recommend that the weak areas of the NV4500 be treated and not the entire gear pack off of the main shaft. This is what we recommend.  Cryo treat the following:

  • Cluster gear weight 24 Lbs

  • 3RD GEAR weight 4.10 Lbs

  • Input Shaft 6 Lbs

  • 5TH Main Shaft Gear 1.4 Lbs

That's a total of 32 Lbs at $10.00 per pound so $320 to cryo treatWe will disassemble and reassemble the shaft for an additional $65.00There is no need to do 1/2/R gears as they never break, also there isn’t a main shaft breakage issue eitherOne other thing to consider is if the NV4500 transmission already has the updated main shaft in it or not. If it does not this would be the time to update that also as the 5th gear nut issue (5th gear backing off) would want to be addressed when it is apart. The cost of the new updated main shaft is $199.95A second option is we can supply a brand new OE. transmission with the cryo treated gears mentioned above that would have the updated main shaft and the updated cast iron ext housing for $2100 outright plus freight and you could keep your old NV4500 trans for a spare or to sell it on ebay for parts.  See the other manual transmissions and parts we offer on our site.
