What is the BW4405 Transfer Case
The BW4405 was manufactured utilizing electric shift, computer controlled shifting and power distribution between the front and rear differential. The BW4405 was introduced by Ford in the 1995 Explorer this transfer case is also used in Mercury’s Mountaineers. This Borg Warner 4405 is Torque on Demand, a full-time, chain drive, 2.57:1 ratio, with two piece magnesium housings. Shifting is an advanced design electronically by energizing a electromagnet, which actuates a electromechanical ball ramp clutch assembly. This transfer case has AWD, 4WD low and 4WD high, when shifting into 4WD low the vehicle speed must be under 5 MPH. This transfer case design utilizes an internal clutch system to vary the torque between the front and rear differential. A rear mounted vehicle speed sensor is used to communicate with the on board control system. The rotary shift cam is connected to the transfer case mode fork and range fork and actuated by a shift motor (encoder motor). This unit has a left side drop (front output), recommended fluid for the BW4405 is automatic transmission fluid ATF.
The BW4405 can show early wear of the rear case by the output bearing, causing failure of the shift cam, range hub, and input shaft. This failure mode may be manifested by popping or grinding sound in reverse as well as excessive rear yoke end play. Tire pressure and tire diameter is critical to the BW4405 transfer case all tires should be measured (diameter) and be the same, uneven tread wear can effect this transfer cases performance and life.
